Other birds of note today around the field station (but not in the nets) included two fly-over […]

(3/15/2006)- Slow Day at Palo

Filed under: Chat, Bird Sightings, Bird Banding — Chad March 16, 2006 @ 12:03 am

Today I banded with Libby and Sandra and we had a fairly slow day. We only caught 3 birds, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a single Wrentit. One of the Ruby-crowned Kinglets and the Wrentit were recaptures meaning that they have already been banded and processed before. Only one of the Ruby-crowned Kinglets was a new […]

Greetings,
Today we banded at Pine Gulch on Bolinas Lagoon in the Point Reyes area of CA. It was my third day of banding this season with PRBO and it was the best day of the three. Highlights included catching a single SWAMP SPARROW, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, and female ALLEN’S HUMMINGBIRD.
There was of course great birds around […]

Amazing Show

Filed under: Chat, Bird Sightings — Ry March 13, 2006 @ 7:35 pm

Life was good this afternoon standing in a downpour overlooking the serengeti with buddies Carol and Finn.  Lightening danced everywhere –even a little too close, and the setting sun played tricks with the colors of the dead grass, wet trees and heavy clouds.  Bird life was intense.  Geese (mostly Canada but at least a few […]

Weekend Warriors

I spent the weekend preparing Lime Hollow’s Blue Bird and Wood Duck Nest Boxes for the upcoming breeding season. Believe it or not there are 35 Bluebird boxes and 10 Wood Duck Boxes on the property. I’m working to get them all documented on Cornell Lab of Ornithology Birdhouse Network –a cool website […]

Greetings,
Banding today at Palo was rather slow due to the weather (rain), we also closed early as well. However, we did have one nice bird on the day (only bird)…a 2nd year male Varied Thrush. Rock on!!! I got to extract it from the net and as I got to within 5 feet of the […]

Days 4-6 (Number 500)

Filed under: Chat, Bird Sightings — Chad March 9, 2006 @ 11:22 pm

The last few days have been a complete whirlwind from Flagstaff AZ to Sacramento CA to Bolinas CA, and finally back to Sacramento CA to take my folks to the airport for their departure on the 10th, hence the lack of posts over the past few days. Regardless, I have a lot to report:
On day […]

Day 3

Filed under: Chat, Bird Sightings — Chad March 6, 2006 @ 11:34 pm

Well Day 3 ended with a successful drive from Oklahoma City, OK to Flagstaff, AZ. The trip was long without a lot of bird activity, but it was still beautiful nonetheless…even with all that LFN and mesquite hanging around.
In Oklahoma City, Great-tailed Grackles paid their first visit of the trip and were seen from there […]

Day 2

Filed under: Chat, Bird Sightings — Chad March 5, 2006 @ 11:08 pm

Day two of the cross country trek from NY to CA proved a little more fruitful in the bird department. While no Ivory-billed Woodpeckers were observed in Arkansas, several Eurasian Collared-Doves were as was a Loggerhead Shrike. Other good birds of note included more Black Vultures, this time in Nashville TN, Eastern Bluebirds in western […]
