Greetings,
A late evening run out to Lake Taghkanic State Park in
Columbia County produced many YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
(30+) and around 10 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, all of
which appeared to be singing. A pair of OSPREY were
also observed chasing each other around the lake. The
Yellow-rumps brings my total of warbler species since
Sunday to 5. However, all were in low numbers […]
Despite the wind tonight, I decided to go for a quick walk down the “Rail Trail” near my house. Not much was observed overall, but I was fortunate enough to tally one adult male BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER. It is nice to be back east for a spring migration!
Other birds of note were several singing Ruby-crowned […]

Out of nowhere it appears that Chipping Sparrows have come back in force. Everywhere yesterday Chipping Sparrows dominated the air with their trill songs at Lake Taghkanic State Park, and today, for the first time this season, they have joined the others at the feeders. Noticeably absent were American Tree Sparrows who […]

Greetings,
With the morning off from work, I decided to hit up the local birding spots in Columbia County, and I was not disappointed.
MILLER RD.- CHURCHTOWN:
My first stop was Miller Road in Churchtown, where the pond […]
I wasn’t sure it would ever happen, but spring has come to northern Vermont. Early April looked promising, but then two straight weeks of miserable cold rain and snow including a nasty nor’easter reversed and negated any sign of spring. That period of snow provided incredible action on the bird feeders. Junco’s and goldfinches were […]
Greetings,
As expected, the numbers of American Goldfinches in my yard is continuing to increase on a daily basis. Currently there are about 50-60 American Goldfinches visiting my feeders (7), and with them continuing to molt into their alternate plumage, the yard is alive in yellow! Unfortunately, as I was going to grab more thistle from […]
Greetings,
Able to take a quick ride out to Geoffroy’s Pond on Miller Road, and nearby fields in Churchtown, I was able to find a pair of GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 10 COMMON MERGANSERS, 8 GREAT BLUE HERON, 15 WILSON’S SNIPE, and a single TREE SWALLOW. Not bad for a 10 minute stop…

Greetings,
I suppose by now it has become obvious that it has been slow around here in the Chat Happens world. The last two weeks have shown the Hudson Valley (and Vermont) a bad time in the weather department, and my personal life has been rather busy between work and my band. However, the forecast is […]
