Cinco de Mayo Bird Banding

Hola!

On a foggy Cinco de Mayo, fellow bander Cate Brown, and I had a fairly productive day of banding at the Palomarin Field Station.

A foggy morning at the Palomarin Field Station

While overall numbers were low (9 birds), we had a fairly high diversity of species (7).

On the day we caught:

  1. Anna’s Hummingbird (1)
  2. Allen’s Hummingbird  (2)
  3. Hairy Woodpecker (1)
  4. Western Flycatcher (1)- Could not identify in hand to Pacific-slope or Cordilleran
  5. Swainson’s Thrush (2)
  6. Wilson’s Warbler (1)
  7. Purple Finch (1)

All in all it was a fun day, and a good day to be banding. We were able to advance age (aging a bird with more precision) many of the individuals, and because it was a relatively slow day, this allowed us close inspection of the birds in the hand for a longer time period.

Good banding,

  1. Alicia:

    ASY Swaison’s Thrush?

  2. Chad:

That is absolutely correct! Originally banded by myself yesterday I had conservatively aged it AHY, however I had strong feelings of ASY. The bird was recaptured today and aged ASY by a different bander. Good work…
