Is Migration Finally Coming?

While recent migrants have shown up at sites in Coastal CA in some numbers (Wilson’s Warblers etc.), I have only added a few new species to my year list within the last week, mostly with my friend Chris in town. Recent additions included Black-crowned Night-Heron, Forster’s Tern, and a lingering Thayer’s Gull. However, while talking to Keith Hansen in town about migration I was informed that at the nearby Golden Gate Park, one of his friends picked up 106 species in a quick morning of birding! Birds found included Western Kingbird, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Western Tanager, and Black-headed Grosbeak. Hopefully some of these new arrivals will make their way out to the point. With all the weather surely holding them back, I can’t help but feel that when the gates are opened it’s going to rain birds. Let’s hope I’m right.
