New Jersey Trip Report
Greetings,
Well, it has been some time since I did the trip to NJ with my girlfriend Betsi, but I wanted to get a little stuff written down about it before I forgot. Overall, the trip was a success. Surely there were species that we missed (Whimbrel, Summer Tanager, etc), but we had a great time, visiting such great southern NJ spots as Edwin B. Forsythe NWR, Cape May Point State Park, Higbee Beach WMA, Rhea’s Farm (The Beanery), Sunset Beach, Cape May Bird Observatory, Belleplain State Forest, and Stone Harbor. And of course this was Betsi’s very first trip birding NJ!
Highlights included Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Orchard Orioles among many different species of shorebirds at Brigantine (different habitats of course!), 6 species of terns on day 1 (Forster’s, Common, Gull-billed, Least, Royal, and Roseate), Blue Grosbeak at the Beanery, Yellow-breasted Chats at Higbee (Go Chatley!), and of course hearing (but not seeing) many of the expected southerly warblers (Prothonotary, Yellow-throated, and Kentucky). All that on top of great food, great weather, and a great travel companion yielded perhaps one of my favorite trips down to the “Cape” yet. I can’t wait till the next visit (the fall?).
Good Birding,
~Chad
