Nocturnal Strikeout

Greetings,

Tonight after work, my girlfriend Betsi and I decided to take a quick listen for any nocturnal birds that might be in the neighborhood of her house. Despite the open fields and dense woods mixed together with many low-lying wet spots we were unsuccessful in detecting any nocturnal species, in particular owls and American Woodcock. The only thing we were able to come upon was her brother on the deck to his cabin across the street. It appeared he was roused from the cabin’s warmth to inspect the mysterious call (my Screech-owl imitation) coming from the depths of the night from across the street. He quickly went back inside once we called out to him who it was.

While disappointing to not detect any nocturnal species of birds, it was nice to once again be outside without the cold grip of winter bearing down. In short time the days will be getting longer, and many more woodcock and owls will be out doing their thing allowing us a glimpse into their life. All in due time…

It seems that Senor Great Horned decided not to lull me to sleep tonight, and I’m thinking it’s because we invaded his field earlier…perhaps he’ll get over the fact, resolve to share the territory, and let me add another bird to my noob life list? I hope! :-D

    Whooo-Wawww,

A barred owl has been visiting our yard here on a regular basis lately but has only been giving a single Whoo-Waww every once in a while.
I wonder what my housemates will think when they hear me answer back?
