OCWAs and WIWAs Oh My!!!

Greetings,

Today 4 of us headed out to the Point Reyes National Seashore to band at Muddy Hollow, one of our offsites. While rain threatened for part of the morning, we were able to get our full hours and were able to get some good birds to boot. Many warblers were around the site today, with a total of 30 or so individuals of 3 species within a 2 minute walk of the banding lab (back of a car). 2 of the 3 warbler species that we observed we also caught (Orange-crowned, and Wilson’s). Photos of the two individuals caught of these species follows the post.

Other species caught included American Robin, Bewick’s Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Chestnut-backed Chickadee and Allen’s Hummingbird.

Other birds of note on the site included Steller’s Jay, Hutton’s Vireo, Pine Siskin, and both Virginia Rail and Sora being present in the wet meadows. The Sora was actually the first time the species was detected on any of the sites that we band at…ever. It was a first!!!

Good birding,

~Chad (4/10/2006)

C-man, nice pictures, I did not know that warblers in the west like to go for the scruffy look though. I wonder how long it will take for that style to make it here?

As a comparison, the warbler action in central NY consists of a smattering of Pine Warblers and Palm Warblers –I have seen neither.

Latest arrivals to my yard include Yellow Bellied Sapsucker and Field Sparrow.
