Purple Rain…I mean, Purple Snow

In general, activity at the bird feeders today has picked up due to the light snow falling throughout the area. While overall numbers for several species are at a winter-time high today, (Dark-eyed Juncos, Blue Jays, Brown-headed Cowbirds etc.) most notable is the numbers of Purple Finches attending the seed. No less than 12 individuals have been present at the feeders in the front yard with 2 males and 10 females. It is likely that more could PUFIs are around but are not being observed from inside the house. Supporting this is the fact that yesterday I observed 3 males in all their raspberry-glory at once in the yard, 1 more than is around today.

Unfortunately another bird species is at a winter-time high today as well, House Sparrow.
