Rare Gulls on the Move
Greetings,
Over the past few weeks rare gulls appear to be on the move across North America. With unprecedented numbers of Slaty-backed Gulls turning up coast to coast this winter and the recent report of a Ross’s Gull at Niagara Falls it would appear that birders should be more diligent about checking out large flocks of gulls if found.
To help illustrate this influx of gulls, and in particular Slaty-backed Gulls, please click [here] for a link that will take you to a Google Map showing locations, dates, and numbers of Slaty-backed Gulls over the course of this winter. It is a very good resource and is well worth the look. Thanks to Jaegermaster for this tool…
Here’s to Ivory, Slaty-backed, and pink gulls everywhere…

No more than 4 days after reporting the presence of rare gulls across the northeast and North America there was reports of many LITTLE GULLS around Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region of NY. Up to 13 were observed by one observer over the course of a day. Also present were unusually high numbers of Bonaparte’s Gulls at these locations…at least that is what I gathered from the reports that I briefly scanned over.
