Tradeoff?
Greetings,
Sometimes just as in life, birding is a big trade off. With the day off from work, I awoke with plans filling my head of a leisurely morning cleaning my room with frequent looks outside for new species on the year at my feeders, all from the comfort of my house. Well, as I looked outside, I did see a new species for the year, am immature COOPER’S HAWK, intensely watching my feeders for the stray finch.
However, as great as it was to see this lovely accipiter perched near my window I realized that my chances of finding any other species today were to be slim, which was exactly what happened. It took a good 2 hours after his departure for any species to use the front yard feeders. The backyard feeders apparently did not get disturbed as the Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals continued their daily attack on the seed. All in all it was as great experience to see such a bird from the comforts of my home…too bad that was all that was seen…

I had the same thing happen yesterday as well and again today.
Instead of refilling 6″ of niger seed in the feeders, I refilled only 2″.
