NJ- The Project
The focus of the project is to study the migration ecology of shorebirds along the Delaware Bay of New Jersey. The primary species that will be focused on are Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, as well as Short-billed Dowitcher. The birds will be banded, as well as color-banded (flagged), and basic measurements will be done such as aging and sexing by plumage and molt, as well as by looking at the fat content, which is particularly useful. By looking at fat content, and by resighting the flags from the field, one can tell how healthy the bay is, and how important it is remaining in the migration of these long-distance migrants.
